Back to PROJECTS
Camden Communality was a project based around making new vegetable patch in the garden of Camden Arts Centre. During her residency, Ilana used the vegetable patch as a point to look at existing and accidental communities that evolved or existed around it.
Questions such as these were addressed in the Communality project:
How do communities come about?
How should they be sustained?
How do we hold on to our conversations?
How does your garden grow?
This project and Ilana’s interests in communities and the interactions within them has been inspired in part by her involvement in setting up the Star and Shadow Cinema in Newcastle Upon Tyne. This volunteer run creative space and thrives because of the enabling power of a positive community within the cinema allowing freedom of creative expression.
Activities that were arranged throughout Ilana’s residency at Camden Arts Centre included the creation of the vegetable garden, invitations for discussions, visits to many local communities, collective drawing workshops, discovery of myths, root vegetable carving, daytime and late night picnics and a resulting publication. And of course lots of tasty veg to eat.
